JUST ANOTHER DAY COLLECTION

"THE JULIET BODY" • 2021

Just Another Day pursuits the modern-day love story with oneself and others whilst discovering the angst and transition from sublime happiness to anarchy and undoing. Exploring the death of the fashion archetype this collection incorporates avant-garde streetwear fashion that is inspired by the love story of Romeo and Juliet, 1900’s Korea and the dandy man to create strong, extravagant androgynous pieces. The collection includes hand painted garments, pleating, hand made textured quilting and embroidery.

The Juilet Body - Hand quilted textile with hand painted neo expressionism.

A collaboration piece by Fashion Designer, Samantha Saint James and Artist/Designer, Tyron Tran.

This piece makes connections with the exterior and interior of the human and how viewers can interpret the skin to be the mask for our skeleton. The choice of colours also connect with the idea of deception - how masks can deceive what is true to an individual. The ideas of this piece is heavily inspired by my life and experience. I wanted to explore the use of masks by teenagers whether it is to hide, protect or depict a part of one's identity and look at the idea of how a door works like a mask. The door works well as it has 'two sides' and can show the 'front' and 'back', the 'inside' and 'outside' and/or the 'outer' and the 'inner' layer. The choice of being more free with the application and method of painting was to represent the choice we make as individuals and the journeys we go on - we don't always plan ahead and make the 'right' choices. Those random, unplanned painted areas are a symbol of the aspect of freedom we sometimes feel we have in our lives as we grow. The incompletion and messiness symbolises the continuation of life. The growth, development and change that happens in life and in one's social, cultural, mental and physical identity.

This artwork looks at the idea of 'repurpose' of an artwork which challenges the question of collaboration and the ownership of artworks. I focus on the idea that art is forever developing - much like humans (growth/evolution). New experiences and interests come into our lives and become apart of one's identity. Throughout the folio, I explore ideas of identity through teenage life and mind and the use of masks and idea of growth and development. This artwork strongly links and ties together those concepts to form a portrait.  A strong relationship is present between my personal life and this artwork as it's essentially all to do with my identity and what I identify myself as - for example, the purple represents uniqueness and artificiality as well as the colour is 'iconic' to me according to my close friends as they can identify me through that colour. The messiness focuses on showing my struggle to identify myself completely, the incompletion is a result of that. Viewers are expected to interpret the artwork and make personal connections with it as we all struggle to fully identify ourselves because we are forever growing, developing and changing - it is okay, we can still look pretty whether you're in a mess or not.
